Practicing Your Roulette Game

An early description of the roulette game in its current form is found in a French novel La Roulette, ou le Jour by Jaques Lablee, which describes a roulette wheel in the Palais Royal in Paris in 1796. Roulette (named after the French word meaning “little wheel”) is a casino game which was likely developed from the Italian game Biribi. Yes — on a standard European wheel, every bet carries the same 2.70% house edge. On a European wheel with 37 pockets, 18 are red, 18 are black, and 1 is green (zero).

However, over the long run these wins do not compensate for the losses incurred in between. They were arrested and kept on police bail for nine months, but eventually released and allowed to keep their winnings as they had not interfered with the casino equipment. At the Ritz London casino in March 2004, two Serbs and a Hungarian used a laser scanner hidden inside a mobile phone linked to a computer to predict the sector of the wheel where the ball was most likely to drop. The new wheel, designed by George Melas, was called “low profile” because the pockets had been drastically reduced in depth, and various other design modifications caused the ball to descend in a gradual approach to the pocket area. As a result of this, the British roulette wheel manufacturer John Huxley manufactured a roulette wheel to counteract the problem. If effective, they raise the return of the game above 100%, defeating the betting system problem.

• Instead of doubling a bet after a loss the gambler doubles the bet after every win.
• “Inside” bets involve selecting either the exact number on which the ball will land, or a small group of numbers adjacent to each other on the layout.
• The grid section where the red and black numbers are placed is known as inside (bets).
• In some jurisdictions, online roulette is permitted only through licensed operators, while others apply additional restrictions or bans.
• In simple terms, if you make this prediction correctly you win, but the game is a little more complicated than that.

The dealer will then sweep away all losing bets either by hand or by rake, and determine the payouts for the remaining inside and outside winning bets. When a winning number and color is determined by the roulette wheel, the dealer will place a marker, also known as a dolly, on that number on the roulette table layout. “Outside” bets, by contrast, allow players to select a larger group of numbers based on properties such as their color or parity (odd/even).

The following variants are available in free-play format. European, American, and French roulette share the same core structure but differ in wheel composition and rules. The roulette table is divided into an inside area (the number grid) and an outside area (broader categories like Red/Black or Dozens).
